Choosing to have facial cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is a highly personal decision. Your surgeon should possess the necessary credentials to perform the anticipated procedure.
Highly trained members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) are board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to perform plastic surgery of the face, head and neck, and perform most of the nasal plastic surgery in the nation. AAFPRS members are qualified to perform cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures that vary from facelifts to delicate reconstructive microsurgery of the face, head and neck.
To be certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, every member must meet all of the following criteria:
- Has completed an approved residency after medical school in one of two surgical specialties focusing on facial plastic surgery (Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery or Plastic Surgery)
- Is double boarded, having earned prior certification in one of the specialties through the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada.
- Has successfully completed a two-day written and oral examination
- Has submitted for peer-review an acceptable record of at least two years’ clinical experience, including operative reports of a minimum 100 facial plastic surgeries; and
- Holds proper licensure and subscribes to the AAFPRS Code of Ethics.
To verify your surgeons’ AAFPRS certification, contact the board office at 1-703-349-3223 or visit the website www.abfprs.org.
Not necessarily. While many patients choose to have touchups as they continue to age, cosmetic surgery itself does not accelerate aging. We have many lesser procedures to help maintain your looks. Again the answer depends on perception. Many patients continue to be fastidious about their appearance and wish to maintain it with more frequent touch-ups.
Vanity is an excessive preoccupation with appearance, whereas my patient's concerns are usually very appropriate. Most people agree that what's on the inside of a person is more important than the outside. But we are coming to know that the outside is important also. How you look has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself. People who are pleased with their looks tend to be more confident, energetic and outgoing.
Many patients say they don't look as young as they feel. The best age to have cosmetic surgery is when the aging process bothers you enough to correct it - when you don't look like you any more. Many patients say "when I look in the mirror, I see my mother..."
Ask yourself the magic question: "Will I gain enough (improved appearance and increased self-esteem) to outweigh the cost (time, money, risk)? If your answer is, "yes", then do it now. If it is "no", then wait until the answer becomes "yes"…if it ever does.
Another question to ask is: "When do I want to look the best I can look? Now? …or some other time?" One thing is certain: the earlier cosmetic surgery is done, the longer a patient can enjoy its rewards.
Costs vary considerable depending on the amount of work needed. At the time of your consultation, a fee quote will be provided, and will include a charge for surgery, the anesthesia, and the operating facility.

Most patients have seen facial cosmetic surgery that was obvious. It is a truism that you can spot all of the bad results and few of the good ones. Dr. Slack avoids the tightly pulled, unnatural look, and concentrates on producing a nonsurgical, natural look, with hidden incisions. The pull is placed on the deeper tissues, fat is sculpted, and the skin is redraped without being pulled tightly.
If you are interested in this option, our patient care coordinator will review various choices with you.
